When we look at the research, scholars are unanimous in their thought that science and scientific thinking needs to be introduced to children in their early years. Early science education promotes children’s competence, motivation and interest in science. Further, early science education produces better learning outcomes in their formal school years. However, not all kinds of early science instruction is effective for young children. Early science education requires remarkably different pedagogical approaches than what are usually implemented with children in school environments.

The most effective way to build a young child’s understanding of the natural sciences is through play. Play is a fundamental way for children to nurture different kinds of skills such as social interaction, emotional sensitivity and everyday problem-solving. Through play, children will be able to relate scientific concepts and practices to their cultural worlds and hence, make science relevant to themselves.

Thinkerables @ School is our offering specifically tailored to suit educators. Our pedagogical model is designed to give educators all the tools they need to systematically develop science process skills in the children they mentor. Phase 1: Introduction to Science Pedagogy

In this phase you will learn about the science process skills and how to conduct a STEAM lesson for young children using a Thinkerables lesson. You will access

  • STEAM experiments to perform with children

Phase 2: Introduction to Deep Space Land

In this phase of the training you will be provided with several problems and experiments that help you to become an efficient STEAM educator. You will access

  • Performative experiments to work with children with step-by-step video guidance

  • Modules that recap and provide in-depth guidance on teaching science skills to children using narratives and drama

  • Exercises, assignments and tests to assess your science process skills knowledge and enable your access to Phase 3

Phase 3: Real-time training by using Thinkerables lessons with children

In this phase you will be implementing the Thinkerables lessons in your environment and work with children to solve problems that occur in the Deep Space Land. You will access

  • Modules for conducting STEAM education using Thinkerables theme and lessons

  • Detailed lesson plans for each theme

  • Videos for conducting the lessons

  • List of materials for conducting the lessons

At the end of Phase 3 you will be awarded with a certificate authenticating the completion of your training
